Went snowboarding yesterday with my coworkers at GALA, a spanking new ski resort that is really hi-tech! The train station itself is complete with an onsen, sleeping room, recreation area, ski rentals, and a hallway that lead straight to the gondola! We left at Friday night after work on the last train and the Shinkansen was so fast, it took only 1.5hrs to get to Niigata from Tokyo Station. They were still selling the Ekiben (special Train Station bento) which you have to eat when you go on a long trip on the Shinkansen! After getting there at midnight, you can go to the Onsen, then party with your friends in the recreation room and go to sleep quite comfortably at the sleeping room with some zabuton pillows provided, wake up in the morning, go to the Onsen again! I swear the board that I rented were brand new, my fingers hurt just holding the board because the edges were so sharp. We were lucky it was snowing like crazy so we even got the best powder condition! Although GALA is probably more suitable for beginners because the mountain wasn't all that big. But if you're short on time but still want to do a full day of boarding then I definitely recommend GALA and enjoy the hi-tech convenience of Japan.
